Pakistan Reinstates Death Penalty After Seven-Year Moratorium

After a seven-year moratorium on capital punishment, Pakistan has officially reinstated the death penalty for both terrorism and non-terrorism offenses including apostasy, adultery, and blasphemy, and will begin executions in cases where all legal appeals and pleas have been exhausted. More than 8,000 people are on death row in Pakistan including Asia Bibi, a Christian mother of five who was convicted of blasphemy in 2010. Bibi is making her final appeal to the Pakistani Supreme Court, and could face the death penalty. Christians fear this development for now because many religious minorities are imprisoned for their faith, and may be put to death legally.
