Mother-of-eight murdered in revenge for husband’s conversion

October 26, 2015 UGANDA

This is despicable!

Please pray for a brother in Christ in east Uganda whose wife has been murdered because he left Islam – only a month after his brother was killed for the same reason.
Strangers dragged Mamwikomba Mwanika from her home in Kalampete in the district of Kibuku last Monday and assaulted her. The mother-of-eight died on her way to hospital.
Her attackers had reportedly demanded to see her husband George who they said had ignored their warnings that he should return to Islam.
Her husband’s brother, Samson Nfunyeku, was killed in Kalampete on September 23 after he took part in a religious debate with Islamic scholars (Prayer Alert, October 19). Kalampete residents have asked for greater security in the area.
George Mwanika has received death threats – and says he fears for his life and for his children. But he is standing firm in his faith. ‘We are seeking God’s protection and His peace,’ says George. ‘May God give me the courage to continue sharing the love of Christ to those who are lost.’
While Uganda is predominantly Christian, some eastern areas have large Muslim populations. Christians with a Muslim background are a particular target for persecution.

  • Please pray that God will comfort George and his children in their grief. Thank the Lord that he is ‘close to the brokenhearted’ (Psalm 34:18). Pray that they will stay strong in their faith.
  • Thank God for the overcoming faith and powerful witness of George and Samson. Pray that others will come to faith and grow in their commitment to Christ as a result, and that God would protect believers in east Uganda, especially converts.
  • Pray that the Ugandan authorities will have determination and wisdom to know how to tackle extremism.
