As we enjoyed being in our homes and spending time with our families on Christmas Eve, Peninah and her three children were watching extremists tear down their house. The reason? Turning to Christ and rejecting Islam in an area of eastern Uganda where such a decision can have serious consequences. Militant local Muslims, angered by Peninah’s conversion, had written several letters to her warning that her days were numbered. She is a single mum and the family are now homeless. The attack on Peninah’s home in Pallisa came the day before masked men raided a church in Obokora village, in the same district, on Christmas morning. Hearing jihadist chants, Pastor Erod and his congregation tried to escape through a back door – but they were badly beaten. Five church members were left with serious injuries, including broken bones. The attack appears to be linked to the fact that a Muslim had given his life to Christ and been healed at the church the previous night – then told others about his new faith.
- Pray that God will provide a new home and livelihood for Peninah and her children.
- Ask God to protect all those who are turning to Christ in Uganda: pray that their numbers will multiply despite the persecution.
- Pray that perpetrators will be apprehended and punished.
- Pray that God would renew the strength of pastors such as Erod and re-envision them for the work He has prepared for them to do (Ephesians 2:10).
